  • Anxiety including GAD

Anxiety is one of the most common symptoms of stress and distress. It tends to be in the form of constant worry, anxiousness, overthinking, seeing problems as enormous and almost impossible to deal with. In effect, anxiety is really based from a feeling of fear. When a person is fearful or becomes afraid of something, a situation or someone, this fear then grows to become a bigger problem in your mind than you had originally envisaged.

Anxiety is very common and occurs on a daily basis for many people. This can range from young people becoming fearful of their exams coming up, to parents being extremely worried about how they are going to manage to pay their bills.

Anxiety has a useful function, in that it is meant to be a form of protection from danger. For e.g. if you were being chased by a wild animal, then it is perfectly natural to be anxious as your automatic response is to run. This type of anxiety serves a useful purpose, as it triggers the flight, fright, freeze response in your brain and adrenalin is driven into your body to get  you out of danger and harms way. Unfortunately, anxiety today is far too common for everyday issues. Many people have become paralysed by their anxiety which then prevents them from dealing with problems in effective and helpful ways.

GAD or Generalised Anxiety Disorder, is where you may be worrying excessively about many things on a daily basis, over a long period of time. This type of anxiety can have a debilitating effect on the quality of your life and often affects your goals, relationships and mental health.

It is important to recognise when you are constantly feeling anxious or worried, as this is a good sign that you may need to seek some help to address how you are dealing with things. It is actually harder to constantly live with these types of issues,  than to get the help you need to resolve your problems.  So let this be the first step to choose not to live with anxeity and fear.

  • Social Anxiety Issues

Social Anxiety issues or commonly known as social anxiety disorder, is a description of how you may frequently feel in a social environment around people, as being especially difficult and uncomfortable. You may become precoccupied with thinking that they may be staring at you, ridiculing you, making assumptions about you, thinking less of you and so on.

In a social environment that you are often not familiar with, you are likely to find these situations very uncormfortable as you do not like any attention being drawn to you. In addition, you may often think less of yourself by criticising how you look, what you say and what you do. As highlighted, all of these factors are frequently what you have thought about in your mind, prior to going to an event and without necessarily having the evidence to show this.  Many people who experience social anxiety disorder will frequently withdraw from social situations, including with family and friends, to prevent going through the uncomfortable feelings of possible rejection and unnecessary attention.

Soical Anxiety distress and disorder can be effectively treated with cognitive behavour therapy. It is important to note that there are many instances in life where people from all backgrounds may make assumptions and have opinions about other people. But if you have become severley affected by the thought of this, then you may have a problem with this type of anxiety. It is important to seek some help so that when you are around people, you can do so without having to fear anyone, or having a distorted belief about this experience.

  • Procrastination

Procrastination is the practice of putting off, avoiding or delaying to do important tasks until the very last minute, or in some cases not at all.  Usually when a person has a priority goal such as preparing for an exam, or meeting a deadline, the idea of this task may fill them with worry, fear, dread and overwhelm. This habit or practice of delaying important tasks can often lead to self diminishing feelings such as a lack of confidence and self doubt. Followed by avoidant behaviours, such as doing meanial tasks or the least priority task before the most importnat one. In effect, procrastination lies firmly within the remit of anxiety and fear of what is ahead of you to do.

Procrastination can create multi problems if not deatt with and addressed promptly. Unfortunately, many people have allowed themselves to be gripped with the practice of procrastination due to seeing the goal or priority as bigger than their ability to handle. In fact people have a huge capacity and ability to deal with many simple and complex tasks. But where this problem lies is seeing the things that need to be done as a growing mountain, rather than tackle each stage in small bite sized parts.

One of the most important things to consider here, is what you are allowing to develop in your thoughts and beliefs,  which lead directly to the behavior of procrastination. Once these distorted beliefs are tackled with some help, then you can start to feel a sense of relief and begin to see a lot more confidence in yourself, to tackling just about anything.

  • OCD

OCD also known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, is a mental health condition where a person develops irrational obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.  An individual may often find intrusive unwanted thoughts will constantly come into their mind, which is difficult to control. They then feel compelled to find unhealthy ways to suppress these feelings of distress and anxiety, due to the unwanted thoughts.

Some of these thoughts could result in feeling great distress due to having dirt on your hands, feeling unsafe in public, a fear of transport, the need to feel super secure at home, having marks on the face or other parts of the body etc. Depending upon the types of thoughts that you may experience. this may be followed up by an obsessive behaviour, such as the continous washing of hands and face, in order to feel safe from disease or illness. Or the need to constantly check that the locks in the house work correctly, to ensure safety and protection.

The main purpose and function of these behaviours is to relieve the effects of anxiety and distress of the thoughts. Unfortunately, the compulsive behaviours only provide short term temporary relief, as you would have to continue with this pattren of behaviour to relieve any distress. If anything, it just makes you feel much worse as these behaviours begin to dictate daily life and habits.

Many people who suffer with this condition often feel a sense of embarrasment and shame. You may often find it difficult to tell anyone how you really feel and you may not realise that you could get some effective help, whilst learning new skills to handle unwanted thoughts and obsessive behaviours.

Getting help from a therapist will be a good source of support to begin to tackle this problem.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a very effective form of treatment. It can help you to face your anxieties and fears and address the beliefs that are creating  these problems. You will learn powerful and effective strategies for tackling OCD problems in the future.

  • Depression, low mood

Many people suffer, often for a very long time with depression and low mood. This can be described as feeling down sometimes without any clear reason why, feeling sad all the time, feeling that life is gloomy and hopeless with nothing or very little to look forward to.

Depression can often be the the effects of going through a difficiult experience such as a trauma, the loss of a loved one, struggling to cope with your finances, a relationship breakdown,  a lack of confidence in yourself and much more.

This can be shown in ways that you don't always expect, such as isolating yourself from people who care about you, putting yourself down, giving up on the things that you enjoy doing, keeping your thoughts and feelings to yourself, lashing out, general feelings of unhappiness and hopelessness.

For some people, there may be medical reasons that may cause depressive symptoms. For e.g. your doctor may prescribe antidepressents to deal with low serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin is known as the feel good hormone. It is released when people exercise, get involved in voluntary activities, get good quality sleep, take a brisk walk in the sunshine eat healhily etc.

If you have found yourself feeling very low in mood, or depressive for a very long time, then it is time to seek help. It is always helpful to see your GP to let them know how you are feeling and the way these feelings are affecting your life. Also seeking help from a CBT psychotherapist or counsellor is also a good starting point. This is where we can help. Our psychotherapists can help you with working on any distorted thoughts, beliefs and unhelpful behaviours, that is affecting your daily life. The most important thing to remember is to take action to do something about this problem. At Blue Diamond Wellbeing, we would always encourage you to take care of your mental and emotional health, as this will improve the quality of your life.

  • Lack of Confidence

A lack of confidence is quite a common experience for many people. It can range from not being sure about how to do something, or feeling a little worried about speaking to people in general or approaching a person that you have high regard for. Or it can be more serious such as feeling ashamed because you beleive that you are not confident to pass exams, or tests or undertake other day to day tasks compared to other people, who seem very confident about doing many things.

Lacking confidence is often the result of feeling worried, anxious and afraid of doing new tasks, or speaking to other people for fear of failing or making a mistake. These fears have often been as a result of a past experience, of being told that you are not capable, or not good enough and being put down by others. This can come from partners, family members, friends, work colleagues or anyone.

At some point in life, everyone will experience some form of a lack of confidence expecially when you are trying something new, or being pushed out of your comfort zone. This does not mean that you are not capable, it just means that you are facing a new and interesting challenge which can be exhilirating and difficult.  Unfortunately, someone with a lack of confidence can begin to give in to their thoughts and feelings about their abilities, by veiwing life challenges with dread and fear.  This can affect your ability to feel confident that you can do many things.

At Blue Diamond Wellbeing, we can certainly help you do deal with any issues affecting your confidence, so that you can face new experiences and challenges with confidence and self belief.

  • Low Self Esteem, low Self Worth

Low Self-esteem is generally a strong negative belief about yourself as not being quite good enough, around other people or when you undertake tasks. You may find that whenever you evaluate problems or situations that are difficult or unpleasent, you may very quickly see that you are somehow the problem or the cause of the difficulty.

In some cases you not feel good about yourself if you have been excluded from a group, or because you may not be popular or had a fall out with friends.  In these situations, you begin to think that somehow you are not a very nice person and will start to put yourself down.

Low Self Esteem is always linked to your sense of self worth. Whenever someone suffers from this type of self rating, they have developed distorted and unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, that affect a true and realistic evaluation of any situation. It is highly unlikely that you coild be solely responsible for a task that may have gone wrong at work. Also, it is perfectly natural to have differences of opinions with family and friends without having to blame yourself for this.

At Blue Diamond Wellbeing we can certainly help you to examine any distorted thoughts about yourself and show you some effective ways to think about solving  problems.  Giving yourself a poor self rating is never helpful to anyone and often has a bad impact on your confidence and life goals. We want to help you to avoid this by recognising and valuing your self worth, despite what challenges you may face.

  • Separation and Loss

Separation and loss is an especially difficult experience for many people. This can be in the form of a bereavement such as the death of a loved one, or the break up of a relationship or the loss of a marriage. Even the loss of health into illness or disability, the loss of a home or a valued job resulting in the loss of an important income.

Separation is often linked to the loss of someone you were firmly attached too. Being separated can feel very distressing, as some separations can be permanent, such as divorce and families being broken apart. Separation is the recoginition that an attachment has been broken.

Grief is a normal response to the death or separation of a loved one. Grief is the expression of sadness at the loss because this is often a permanent situation you are now dealing with. It is difficult to put a time limit on how long a person grieves as everyone is different. But grief can lead to depression if your feelings of sadness sink you into a deep hole of depressive moods and feelings for a very long time. This is where you may need some help to address things.

Some separations can be good and helpful, for e.g. if you were in a destructive relationship or work environment, that was causing a great deal of stress on your health and wellbeing. It may actually be the right thing to do to separate, so that you can evaluate what you need in your life.However.  there are some separations and losses that are deeply sad, especially the death or broken attachment of someone you loved and was close to.

If you have found yourself in anyone of the above situations and are finding it difficult to recover from these experiences, it may well be worth seeing your GP and a counsellor. We all have bonds that can be difficult to be separated from, whether that is good or bad. But if you are finding the loss very hard to come to terms with over a very long period of time, you may be experiencing sadness, tearfulness, depression, anger, hurt etc, then its time to get some help.

We can help you to overcome some of these negative emotions and help you to work through what may be going on in your thoughts about things. Don't continue to suffer in silence and let life pass you by. Moving forward in life can really help.

  • Relationship Problems

We are all connected through relationships, whether that is through work colleagues, partners, spouses, family members, friends, communities, faith based or in business. When relationships work well and are healthy, they can bring about happiness, fulfilment and a good sense of connection.

But sometimes relationships may also come with problems, conflict and challenges that may cause distress, harm, frustration, anxiety, fear and disharmony. One of the most difficult areas for people to manage in their lives, is relationship problems that have been on-going for a very long time. This could be due to regular arguments, fault finding, a lack of appreciation of each other, anger issues, resentments of the other, harsh words, commitment issues, money worries, unfair treatmrents etc. When relationship proiblems persist, this can create a wearing down of both parties and a separation can begin to appear. Regardless of who may be at fault for causing the relationship problem, invariably both parties are negatively affected.

We can help you to discover new ways of tackling relationship problems and conflicts in a way that brings about clarity of thoughts and moving forward.  One of the important things to consider is to rebuild your confidence and resilience and to recognise that relationship issues are quite common and that appropriate challenges can also bring about new healthy changes and decisions that will help you and the relationship that you are in.

If you are in an unhealthy, toxic and dangerous relationship, we will work with you to understand how to rebuild your sense of self worth and confidence and to explore ways for you to keep yourself safe. Always remember that relationships are meant to serve you and not to cause you harm. To relate healthily is about give and take, compromise, good boundaries, care and consideration. Sometimes, these elements may need to be developed for a healthy relationship to emerge from the problems. The key thing is for
your relationship issues to be resolved, so we advise you not to leave things to continue getting worse.

  • Anger Issues

Anger can come in many forms and can ignite due to many external and often times internal reasons. External factors like work demands being pilled on top of you each day, being stuck in traffic and you are now late for  a meeting, injustices, oppression, lack of opportunity, discrimination, bullying, harrassment, being isolated,  etc.

Internal factors could be anger towards yourself for a failed or failing relationship; feeling frustrated about not being able to give up smoking or drinking,; lacking confidence in yourself; unable to make ends meet, not feeling good enough, not being in control and so on.

People are triggered by many issues that mean something important to them. This can result in feelings and emotions of anger. This can look like an angry outburst, an explosive argument, being inpatient with others, being harsh and critical on a regular basis, thinking in a vengeful way, being oppressive, unable to show empathy to others or their situation and much more.

The emotion of anger certainly has an important place if used appropriately and wisely. Anger concerning injustice can fuel a person to seek legal advice, protest against the oppression of others and to resolve a situation before it gets worse. This level of anger tends to be measured and clear about goals that will bring about positive and helpful change. It becomes the fuel for change and bringing matters to the surface for resolution.

The other type of anger that can surface is destructive unhelpful anger that causes hurt and harm to others and oneself, mentally, emotionally, psychologically and sometimes physically. If you find that your anger is frequently attacking others verbally or physically, or you constantly block, bully, oppress and ridicule others, you will notice that you have a problem that needs addressing.

Anger towards yourself is often putting yourself down, self loathing, self hatred and feeling worthless, which can result from personalised anger. Anger can be managed effectively well with some great therapeutic strategies, to help you to develop some balance in your thinking, beliefs and expectations. Long term anger creates significant health problems both psychologically and physically. So if you have been feeling angry for a very long time, now is a good time to deal with these issues.

We undersfand that the demands of your work can have a huge effect on you, so we always recommend that you speak to your employer about the most effective ways in which they can support you during work. Unfortunately some work places are not properly equipped to deal with staff issues and they may well undersestimate how work related stress can impact their workforce.

Many professionals with high demanding job roles and responsibilities can be especially vulnerable to burn out and overwhelm. It just seems that more and more is expected of people. So what you need is to take a step back and get the work life balance right again. Private counselling with Blue Diamond Wellbeing can give you that personal space just to let all the work issues go for a while, whilst you can just be yourself. You don't have to be the expert, or the professional, you only need to be you.

We will explore effective ways to manage stress, tension and anxiety in the workplace, giving you skills and strategies to cope better. This will include relaxation and deep breathing techniques and our wonderful personalised spa treatments to deal with those horrible knots in your body. We want you to feel rejuvinated and back in control of your life, not your job or business.
